Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Schwotzer — Programme Director

Prof. Dr. Thomas Schwotzer has been working as a professor at HTW Berlin with a focus on mobile applications since 2008. His research interests are in the field of decentralised, mobile, semantic systems, the Semantic Web of Things and in historical geoinformation systems.

Prof. Thomas Schwotzer studied computer science at the Technical University Chemnitz and worked as a research assistant at the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus. He received his Dr. Ing. degree from the Technical University of Berlin with a thesis on decentralised semantic systems. His first appointment as a professor led him to the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences in 2005. Prof. Thomas Schwotzer has worked as a developer, project manager, product manager and head of research and development for IT companies in Berlin and Munich.

Jette Wienprecht — Programme Manager

Jette Wienprecht is supporting the Pro ITD team as programme manager. She is responsible for contacts with prospective and current students with regards to organisational questions as well as programme marketing and the alumni network. She wants to enable students to experience an enlightening Master’s programme at HTW Berlin, to build lasting and valuable connections and to enjoy the amenities of Berlin.

Before joining HTW Berlin, Jette Wienprecht has been working for six years as project manager for an educational institution. Here, she was conceptualising conferences and trainings for experts from international organisations, European ministries as well as national public services. Jette Wienprecht graduated from Science Po Strasbourg and Jagiellonian University Kraków.

Prof. Dr. Alexander Huhn

Prof. Dr. Alexander Huhn has been working as a professor at HTW Berlin since 2017, specializing in hardware-related developments, including microprocessors, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Smart Cities. His research interests focus on wireless networks, mobile applications, and hardware-based programming.

Prof. Alexander Huhn earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Reading. After completing his doctorate, he led R&D teams in mid-sized companies, driving innovation in wireless communication and sensor technologies. He later worked as a Project Lead at BVG (Berlin Metro), where he contributed to the development and enhancement of wireless communication systems for urban transportation.

His research projects include work on MIMO intelligent antenna systems, professional radio demonstrators, and high-data-rate radio transmission methods. He has authored several publications, such as Open-Source, Decentralized Autonomous, Drone-Based Delivery System, Channel estimation methods for diversity and MIMO in LR-WPAN systems.

Nico Schönnagel

Nico Schönnagel has been teaching the IT Infrastructure module at HTW Berlin since 2018. He shares his knowledge of agile methods and cloud infrastructures.

Nico Schönnagel studied business informatics at HTW Berlin. He is the Founder and Head of the Berlin office of OEV Online Dienste GmbH (a company of the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe). Here, he coordinates the development of innovative digital solutions across all areas of the software landscape, with a focus on cloud solutions. Nico Schönnagel is also a speaker at various software conferences.

Thomas Berger

Thomas Berger has been teaching requirements engineering at HTW Berlin since 2022. His areas of expertise are product management, project management, requirements engineering.

Thomas Berger studied computer science at Humboldt University. He is a senior product and project manager at BIOTRONIK SE & Co. KG, where he coordinates projects, project portfolio of hardware and software products for electrophysiology, and also performs as a connectivity expert.

 

Thanks to his experience in the medical device industry, particularly with one of global medical device companies, Thomas Berger provides students with an in-depth knowledge of requirements engineering, from ideas to product requirements.

Prof. Dr. Nils T. Siebel

Prof. Dr. Nils T. Siebel has been a professor at HTW Berlin since 2011, specialising in IT security, robotics, and computer vision. He holds a Diploma in Mathematics from the University of Bremen and earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Reading, where he focused on real-time computer vision systems. His research bridges electrical engineering, automation, and applied computer science, with a recent focus on cybersecurity in industrial and server environments.

Prof. Siebel’s interdisciplinary expertise equips students to tackle real-world engineering challenges. His teaching emphasises deep, application-oriented understanding—particularly in IT security, programming, and mechatronics. With numerous publications in robotics, machine learning (especially neuroevolution), and secure systems, he fosters a strong academic foundation while encouraging innovation in applied technology.

Rainer Rehak

Rainer Rehak teaches at HTW Berlin, bringing his extensive expertise in digital technologies and their societal impact. With a background in computer science and philosophy, he bridges technical and ethical perspectives, encouraging students to critically examine the role of technology in shaping sustainable and democratic societies.

Rainer is a research associate at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society and the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB). He is pursuing a doctorate at TU Berlin, focusing on systemic IT security and societal data protection. Rainer is also the co-initiator of the “Bits & Trees” conference, highlighting the intersection of digitalization and sustainability. Beyond academia, he advises parliaments and courts, publishes in non-scientific media, and actively contributes to organizations like the German Informatics Society (GI).

Katika Kühnreich

Katika Kühnreich has been a lecturer at HTW Berlin since 2021, specializing in Computer Science, Communication, and Ethics. With a background in political science, sinology, and philosophy, one of her research focuses is the social impact of digitalization. She has extensively studied digital assessment systems — particularly social credit systems in China — and regularly conducts lectures and workshops on these and related topics.

Beyond academia, Kühnreich is an accomplished researcher, author, and consultant. At the Pro ITD program she leads the scientific writing workshops, guiding international students through research methodologies and the step-by-step process of writing scientific papers. Her hands-on approach, including live practical exercises, helps students strengthen their academic writing and analytical skills.

Her extensive experience in academic writing and research practices has empowered HTW Berlin students to successfully publish their work and confidently defend their master’s theses.

Dr. Simon Fokt

Dr. Simon Fokt has been a lecturer at HTW Berlin, specializing in data ethics. His research interests span applied ethics, aesthetics, and men’s studies, with a particular focus on ethical frameworks in data governance and compliance.

Dr. Fokt studied philosophy at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, where he earned his PhD with a thesis on a culturally sensitive definition of art. He later expanded his expertise into applied ethics and digital ethics. Before joining HTW Berlin, he held academic positions at the University of Leeds, where he lectured in applied ethics, and at the University of Edinburgh, where he developed online courses, including a MOOC on data ethics. He has also worked in private consultancy, providing training and advisory services in data ethics for businesses and universities.

Beyond academia, Dr. Fokt is the founder and manager of the Diversity Reading List, an initiative promoting inclusivity in academic curricula. He is also the director of TELdesign Limited, a company specializing in instructional design for academic and corporate training programs.

Prof. Dr. Tatiana Ermakova

Prof. Dr. Tatiana Ermakova has been sharing her expertise in data protection, secure architectures, and digitalization through her extensive research and teaching experience. She is particularly focused on designing secure, privacy-compliant systems and understanding the behaviors of internet users.

Dr. Ermakova earned her doctorate from the Technical University of Berlin, exploring "Security and Acceptance of Cloud Computing in Healthcare." A DAAD scholar, she holds a Master’s in Business Informatics from Humboldt University of Berlin. Her career spans impactful roles, including leading the "Digitalization and Networked Security" research group at Fraunhofer FOKUS and teaching data science at the University of Potsdam. Her research and publications cover multi-cloud security, privacy-enhanced technologies, and health data protection, contributing significantly to the field of secure digital infrastructures.

Ralf Lemp

Ralf Lemp has been teaching at HTW Berlin since 2022. His areas of expertise are general management and digital transformation.

Ralf Lemp holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration from THM Giessen. He has more than 30 years of experience as a CEO, COO and business consultant with focus on digital transformation, cloud computing, agile management, scrum, marketing, sales, business development, new work, leadership, XRM, CRM, HR in international and national companies. After several years working abroad, Mr. Lemp is back in Germany.

With knowledge from Ralf Lemp, students will also sharpen their ability to turn strategy into delivering performance.

Mevre Tunca

Mevre Tunca is a research assistant at HTW Berlin in the field of IT security and data protection and also at the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS). She is pursuing a doctorate in computer science at HTW Berlin through a collaboration with the Free University of Berlin. Her research focuses on privacy by design, cyber supply chains, IT security audits, risk and protection needs analyses, and ethical hacking.

Mevre Tunca holds a bachelor's degree in business administration (digital economy) from BHT Berlin and a master's degree in business informatics from HTW Berlin, both supported by a scholarship from the Hans Bockler Foundation. Since 2014, she has been working on agile software development projects and in information security, and has contributed to international IT standards for digital certificates.

Prof. Dr. Helena Mihaljević

Prof. Dr. Helena Mihaljević has been professor of data science at HTW Berlin since 2018. Her professorship is associated with the Einstein Center Digital Future. Her teaching and research activities focus on statistical data analysis, applied machine learning and information retrieval.

Prof. Dr. Helena Mihaljević studied mathematics at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. She received her doctorate in mathematics from the University of Liverpool in 2009 on topological dynamics of entire transcendental functions. She worked as a research assistant at the Mathematical Seminar of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, as editor and deputy head of department at FIZ Karlsruhe - Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure and as Senior Data Scientist at The unbelievable Machine Company in Berlin.
